12 Tips to Get The Most Comments – on Social Media and Blogging

Tuesday, February 18th, 2014

Do you ever wonder why some people get the most comments? How their social media posts or blogs can get tons of comments – and yours barely get any? Is it some sort of magic? Well, not quite.

But they have figured out that some types of posts are more commented-on than others. And these comments are most likely the best ones to choose – especially if you really want to amp up your comments.

Try a tip or two – or try all 12 to help attract more comments!

Tips to help you get the most comments.

Comments

Comments

Show Your Opinion or Point of View

This is one of the best things you can do with either social media or blogging. Both of these are interactive and that’s the entire point of commenting, to let people respond. When you choose to share your opinion, most people just can’t help to go ahead and share theirs. Now your opinion can be about anything. It can be about serious topics like politics, religion or what you think makes the most delicious sandwich. It might surprise you that the delicious sandwich type of opinions will get just as many comments sometimes as some of the other “hot topic” opinion ones!

Be Conversational

Don’t neglect this oh so important writing style when you create your social media and blog posts. You don’t want to sound like you are writing a formal letter at work or a note to your great grandmother. The best posts have a conversational tone, as if you were talking to a good friend. Just imagine what you would say if you were talking to one of your friends about this topic and that may help get your creative juices flowing.

Ask a Question

Ask A Question

Ask A Question

This is a great way to encourage comments and it will work for so many different types of topics! One of the best things about questions is that you can ask a few questions a week, add this into your routine and people who follow you will look forward to it. Answering questions is interactive. If you are a personal trainer, you may want to ask fitness questions or even healthy eating questions. But remember people also like the conversational type of questions like “What are you doing this weekend?” or “What will you do after your next workout?” (if you are a personal trainer this is a good question to ask).

Have Something of Value to Say

Too many people hop on social media or blogs and just blab away. They don’t have anything truly of value to say. When you join in on the ‘net you want to bring something great to the table, you want people to take notice of you. This is how you get comments. You can share something informative, educational or simply fun. But always try to add value in some way. Take a critical look at your posts over the past week and look at how you have added value – or where you may be lacking so you can plan ahead for the next week’s posts.

Show “How To” Do Something

This is similar to adding value but “How To’s” are very popular content that people love to see on social media and blogs. Think about what niche or business you are in and create a How To series based on this theme. If you have a blog and social media about cupcakes, you could create a series of How To’s about cupcake decorating and baking. Without a doubt these would get a ton of comments! These also would encourage ideas for your next series of How To’s as people ask questions in the comments, so you could do follow-up How To’s and get even more comments!

Make Them Laugh – Really Laugh

Now who doesn’t like to laugh? We can’t imagine anyone who would say “No.” Jokes are some of the most popular content online, especially at blogs and social media. Not only is this content super share-able, but it is commented on like crazy. If you create or share jokes – or just say something funny to make them laugh – you will get lots of comments!

Do Something Provocative

Do Something Provocative

Do Something Provocative

Be warned: being provocative is not for everyone. If you create websites for churches and other religious centers, then probably you wont want to create provocative content at your blog and on social media. But if you are a comedian, an artist or lots of other businesses or niches – being provocative could be the ideal choice in some cases for you.

Be Nice

One of the worst things you can do on social media and blogging is spend all of your time talking about “me, me, me, me!” Try shining the spotlight on people or businesses you follow or advice. Say “Thank You” “Happy Birthday” “Happy Anniversary” or “Congratulations” whenever the celebration comes for people or businesses. Get known as a person or company who celebrates the big and small moments for other people – not only does it make you a heck of a nice guy, but others will be likely to do this for you too!

Try the Occasional Contest

Contests can get expensive to run all the time, but most people and businesses can do them sometimes. Having a contest certainly can encourage comments and followers. Look at other businesses or blogs in your niche to get a sense of what would be popular. Products and gift cards are often favorite prizes – and most often they don’t have to be high dollar amounts. Commenting is usually how people enter to win – and people will want to comment to enter!

Ask for It (comments!)

If you want comments then try asking for them! You probably have more readers than you think. A much higher percentage will read and not comment. The goal is to encourage them to try to comment – and then to comment again and again. Try asking them to comment on some of your posts. End your post by saying something like “What do you think?” or “Leave a message in the comments!”

Then Be Quick To Respond (to comments)

Don’t just let people leave comments and be glad they did so. You need to show that you care about your comments in a big way. Make a special effort to respond to your comments as often as you can. Some on social media and blogging try to respond to every comment. This may be too much for you. But make an effort to respond to as many comments as you can.

Keep the Conversation Going

Keep the Conversation Going

Keep the Conversation Going

We just mentioned how important it is to respond to comments – and we know it sounds like work. The other key factor in encouraging comments is keeping the conversation going. In your comments you may get ideas for your next blog post or social media post. Embrace the interactive aspect of this media you are using.

Yes, you can get more comments. Make an effort and in a short time you’ll notice a nice increase!

  5. Kumar Gauraw says:

I like the idea for asking just like we say in sales. You want to sell something, ask for the sale.

Well, if I may add something, it is also very important to build relationships with other bloggers because it goes a long way in getting consistent comments.

Thank you for sharing these awesome tips.

    Regards,
    Kumar

    Hi Uttoran,
I do agree with you. Being too formal can sometime drive away traffic from blog. So it is better to use conversational tone in order to engage visitors. All the points are extremely helpful.

    • Uttoran Sen says:

      Hey Sarmista Aun,
welcome to Guest Crew and thanks for your comments,

surely, a friendly and conversational tone helps – depends in the kind of business one is running. Some times the nature of business does require for a more professional tone – however in most cases, a friendly tone is always a plus,

      regards,
      Uttoran Sen,

  7. Jayashree says:

My point of view is that when we write articles we should not write just focusing on SEO or to get more comment’s.If we just focus on the quality of the content as you have mentioned then the engagement of the article and commenting will automatically happen.

  8. I love comments on my blog. I read each one with great anticipation. Blogging is about the opportunity to interact with others who I would never meet “in my little offline world” I only have a handful of readers but I appreciate the small following.

When people comment on my blog I like to see real engagement so I am trying to be more mindful of this when I comment. Instead of just saying, “Nice post,” or “Thanks for sharing” I will put more thought into my response.

I need to get better at replying to my messages sooner and asking the reader to comment.

I would like to add that I wish some bloggers would make it easier to comment. I usually stop when I have to jump through hoops just to get the site to recognize I am a human.

      Hey Michelle,
welcome to Guest Crew, thanks for your comment,

Agreed that some sites are very hard to comment on, they ask for registration, they ask for captcha – and most of those captcha are broken making it impossible to comment on, and then they have those stupid comment systems that does not allow URL in the comments.

Good to know that you care about your commentators and your community in the comments section is growing,

      thanks,
      Uttoran Sen,

    Hi Uttoran,

    Informative post indeed 🙂

Yes, your tips are all apt and to the point, though I haven’t really given it a thought as to why I get so many comments on my blog, but I think I should after reading your post.

I think a major part of how things have worked for me, where commenting is concerned is that reciprocation has played a major part, and that’s how I’ve slowly built my blogging community. You keep visiting each others blogs and comment – nothing works better, isn’t it?

Besides, over time, you tend to become good friends than just bloggers – and that’s exactly how relationships are built. You comment, and of course, share each others post too, that’s important!

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

    • Uttoran Sen says:

      Hey Harleena,
welcome to Guest Crew and thanks for your comments,

      Glad you liked the post.

At this moment, if there is one blog that gets the most and the best comments – it is yours. Yes, reciprocation works for building the number of comments and their quality. You leave long, detailed and thoughtful comments on others blog – and they do it on your blog in return.

      thanks,
      Uttoran Sen,

  11. I love receiving comments on my blog, and I reply to them all. I love that someone has taken the time to respond and felt that my post has been of value to them.

It is interesting what you say about actually asking for comments. Many bloggers feel that they can’t ask, but what have you got to loose. Sometimes asking can be just the thing that will trigger someone to actually leave a comment!

    Hi Uttoran Sen
It is not much difficult to speak but to make people speak is the heck of the task. Moreover to make people speak the way you want is double heck of the task.
While writing our post we can have two mindset. We can presume as if we are talking to ourselves or as if we are talking to a crows. If we are in situation one our each post will be like a desert and if we follow the second situation then crowd will obviously react and we have to fully exploit its reaction to make them our subscribers by appreciating their comments and give more benefits with our replies to their comments.
Thanks a lot for sharing such a wonderful post.

  17. Shubh says:

And i try to add value on comment when i made comment on others blog post!
However, well written informative post definitely very helpful for bloggers. Keep it up!
